During the webinar we reflected on the fact that it is often those that are most stuck about their future who benefit from career coaching – people who wish to develop further in their current sector or who are really unsure about their future and it could be a career change.

Career coaching is a process, starting with self reflection and looking at how to make the most of your skills set and experience and it supports you to identify your career goals and work towards them. There is practical advice around best practice along the way but always with a coaching approach.

Finding your passion is key and it is why so many people do wish to change career.

As part of my coaching business AMC Coaching I deliver leadership, business and career coaching. I even find that as part of leadership coaching future career is a topic that comes up regularly.

As a coach I am finding from my clients feedback that coaching is an extremely successful element of learning and development for leaders at all levels. Often seen in the past as a luxury for senior executives more and more organisations are seeing the benefit of their new and developing leaders receiving coaching. This is not just a benefit to the individual but also delivers real impact for the organisation to their bottom line.

This article points to several reasons to have a coach to support you as you develop as a leader:-

1. Having a quality exchange – the opportunity to have discussions about your leadership and your impact along with what drives you I find is very powerful

2. Expanding horizons and clarifying goals – I find this area is key with clients – gaining clarity of personal and professional goals and how to achieve them

3. Redefining leadership or taking a step back – becoming more self aware, taking the time to step back for my clients is very important

4. Learning the importance of emotional intelligence – the development of excellent communication skills tailored to the audience and person comes up a lot in my coaching sessions – how to get the best out of yourself and out of others

5. Becoming a coach yourself – so many of my clients have now got the ‘bug’ for coaching and are taking a coaching approach to their own leadership

This is the organisation I worked with to gain my ILM Level 7 executive coaching qualification before I set up my business – AMC Coaching. It was a great experience working with Clare Smale and her team. The customer service and level of support offered was great and I believe way above that of many other providers.

It is now great to be part of their team and working as associate tutor and leadership coach. I am supporting a wide variety of people from those employed in the public, private and third sector all keen to gain an excellent coaching qualification. Everyone has the same passion for coaching and the benefits it can bring to an organisation. I am still amazed at how many organisations do not bring coaching into their learning and development strategies. I am however constantly amazed, but not surprised, at how much benefit those that do see in the development not just of their people but of their overall organisation.

It has amazed me how motivated this group of people are but getting their story across and matching them with employers is key to help them overcome barriers to employment.

As said by Daniel Goleman “The best leaders don’t know just one style of leadership – they’re skilled at several and have the flexibility to switch between styles as the circumstances dictate.”

He references that leadership styles are rooted in emotional intelligence and that when you understand the connection between emotional intelligence and contextual leadership, you can pause in the moment to evaluate which leadership style is needed to reframe the situation and find the best solution.

A coaching leadership style has really interested me over the last few years but recognising where this works. If we can use this style well it will start to attract, develop and retain the right people.

Based on the fact that it is behaviour that drives performance and not personality. That behaviour is the actions you take and the decisions you make. You can control these things and decide what to do and when to do it.

The suggested specific behaviours that characterise a people orientated approach to accelerating performance really stand out to me –

· Delegating as much responsibility as possible
· Making sure people live up to their commitments
· Encouraging risk taking and personal development
· Actively soliciting ideas and suggestions from people
· Making sure people get credit for their achievements
· Recruiting people with high potential to learn and develop
· Building strong bonds of trust
· Helping people to learn from failure
· Encouraging people to identify how they can best add value

This list is interesting and a lot about learning and development. I also like the emphasis on the important area of building trust.
